Some movies just don’t get old

I like a lot of movies. I have a lot of movies. So all is well with the world in that respect. I have been on a classic movie kick recently. Ok, more than just recently. Last year, just before Christmas, I borrowed the movie Nosferatu from a friend. Wonderful silent ‘Vampire’ movie. I think that movie still holds its own against some of the newer movies. After that I just had to watch all of the classic Horror movies I own. Dracula, The Wolf Man, The Mummy and The Invisible Man were jut like I remembered them. I would love to have those movies on some ‘newer’ media. I have them on tape, and never felt the need (until now) to get them on DVD or Blu-Ray. Good Movies.

Just this past weekend and tonight I watched another couple of movies that just don’t get old for me. I watched Casablanca with my youngest over the weekend. She may or may not comment on it. I really enjoyed it. It has been a few years since I last saw it. I just finished watching The Maltese Falcon this evening. Another movie I haven’t seen in years, but the story still works today.

Finally there is one other movie I’ve been thinking about watching. It is a bit strange that I don’t have it in my collection of movies. Another Bogart film that I saw many times from 1984 to 2003. And we were not watching it for Bogart. My lovely bride loved the acting of Katharine Hepburn, we watched a number of her movies more than once. I just don’t understand why we never purchased any. After looking through all of the movie I own, I don’t recall any movies with her in my collection. I may have to do something about that. Anyway, I really want to see The African Queen in the near future. I heard is was just released to DVD.

The point of all of this? Not much really. I just like to watch some of these old classics over again from time to time.

  1. I liked Casablanca. It was a great movie but the ending was a little confusing. And you have The Lion in Winter with Katharine Hepburn in it.

  2. there is at least one tangenteer who would agree with you, Justin. I love classic movies! Forrest Gump is Hanks at his finest. And, yes African Queen was just released on DVD.

  3. How many besides me can say they have never seen a single one of the movies justj listed? 😀

If you really enjoy classic horror movies, one Angry Video Game Nerd in his real life role is right there with you- he even recently posted a feature-length commentary for 1931 Dracula! (http://www.cinemassacre.com/

  4. I’ve never seen any of the movies justj listed… classic movies for me can be hit or miss. I remember hating one I saw recently, but I can’t remember what it was… But I really enjoyed Gone with the Wind which I saw not too long ago. And I liked Night of the Hunter and House of Wax (NOT the Paris Hilton debacle – never seen that one, and it’s not a classic). Forrest Gump is one of my favorite movies of all time, though I wouldn’t put it in the same ‘classic’ category as the rest of these – different sort of classic; great movie, nonetheless.
And of course, my absolute favorite movie of all time, The Wizard of Oz, is very much a classic 🙂

  5. Anything with Paris Hilton attached to it will surely become classic one day. In whose eyes is anyone’s guess.

  6. relatively speaking

As you know, I love old movies too. Some of my favorite are “On Borrowed Time” (1939) & “You Can’t Take It with You” (1938). If you like them a bit scary & suspenseful “The Uninvited” (1944) is a good little ghost story. “The Spiral Staircase” (1945), “Shadow of a Doubt” (1943), “The Portrait of Jenny” (1948), & “Gaslight” (1944)–all good. Any Bogie & Bacall or Tracy & Hepburn movie. Did you ever see Spencer Tracy’s version of “Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde” (1941)? Very creepy! Sorry, I get carried away…there are so many good ones 🙂

  7. Thanks sis, now I have to go find all of those movies. Yes, Tracy’s Dr Jekyll was a good one. It has been a few years since I’ve seen it.

Justin, I saw Forest Gump, but wasn’t as impressed with it has most people were. It was an OK movie, but that was about it. I don’t even have it in my collection. If I decide I want to see it again, I’m sure there is a copy in the Library.

Taylhis, I know you are a big Wizard of Oz fan, but that movie isn’t in my collection either. I know my youngest has it. I think I saw it too many times when I was younger. It was on TV often and everybody liked it.

Derek, thanks for the link, I’ll have to check it out.

  8. Vertigo. And The Trouble With Harry.

And, I don’t know if it’s a classic, but everybody should watch it: What A Way To Go. Hilarious. Shirley MacLaine, Paul Newman, Robert Mitchum, Dean Martin, Gene Kelly, Bob Cummings, and Dick Van Dyke.
