I’m a fan of steam packets.

I’m not sure if that is the name, but it is the name I give to this type of cooking. It is ideal for cooking for 1 and could be used to cook a variety of food for those fussy eaters. I’m not sure why I never used this much when my kids were young. I only remember doing it for fish. This is food wrapped in foil that gives you all you need for 1 meal. I guess you could put two meals in one packet, but much more than that makes it hard to turn.

Steam packet one
1 or 2 Turkey sausage (brat size) — Too much fat from a regular sausage for this.
1 small onion diced
1 small-medium potato diced
1 medium carrot sliced or diced
Salt/Pepper
2 tablespoons of your favorite salsa

wrap all ingredients in foil — Crimp edges well so it doesn’t leak too much.
cook in Frying pan over medium heat or on a grill at medium heat or in the oven at 325 degrees (on a cookie sheet). Cook for about 30 minutes. When using Grill or frying pan flip over at 15-20 minutes. Slice open packet, if sausage is not done just cook until it is.

More to come (or look back at the fish recipe) 🙂

  1. I do it in my toaster oven so I don’t use as much electricity to cook it….But I never used sausages…..good idea….thanks!

  2. I’m thinking this would be great for a summer ‘grill’ party. Everybody could make up their own and when using a medium heat, you don’t have to watch things as closely. With the steam inside the packets, they don’t burn as easy.

  3. Sounds good… wonder if we can get the grill and the backyard fixed up enough this year to have any grill parties…

  4. Derek, there is one thing that makes the foil packet better than just throwing it in the pan. The flavors of everything you add intermingle during the cooking process. When done with fish, chick and now turkey brats, the meat is moist and very flavorful.

Note, I would not do this with pork sausage or hamburger. Too much grease and the added vegetables would be uneatable.

  5. taylhis – 4th of July. Grill party @ our house. Kid friendly. Food. Pool. Weird/fun people. Come. Eat. Enjoy.
Honestly, if any of you know me or Daddy, ask him for the details closer to time, and you can all come. We’ll feed you. It’s usually a potluck type.

  6. @draclet – Sounds like fun! We have an obligatory camping trip with the extended family in July, we won’t know for sure when that is until they get my brother-in-law’s work schedule… that is the only thing I can see getting in the way…
