Reading a Book Series

Another tangents’ blogger made comments on reading the Harry Potter series. I am currently reading a series by a different author. I’m reading “The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant” again. While I know that some people don’t like reading a long series in succession, that is usually my goal. I like to finish the story. I really don’t like waiting for the next book in the series.

Anyway I’ve had these books for years and they are finally wearing out. They are paperbacks, and they have been read repeatedly. The covers are starting to come off and the pages now have some tears. So I looked them up on the web to see how much it would cost to replace my series. Since I like them a lot, I was hoping to find them in hardback. What I found was that the series was continued. I really didn’t realize this. I will have to do some research, but it looks like there are two additional books with two more on the way. I’m not sure how I feel about this, but I will have to get the books to see if I want to continue the series.

There is my problem. I like to finish a series if I start it and like it. I don’t know how long I will have to wait for the additional books of the series. On one hand I hope the new books are good, on the other hand, I hope I don’t have to wait for the additional two books. A puzzlement.

  1. The first Chronicles of Thomas Covenant consist of the following books

    Lord Foul’s Bane
    The Illearth War
    Power That Preserves

    The second Chronicles

    The Wounded Land
    The One Tree
    White Gold Wielder

I’m not sure yet what the Last Chronicles contains. The books are a Fantasy series in a world where magic works. A man from this world is taken to a world he does not believe exists.

  2. Hmmm, interesting pickle. I am new to reading fiction – after I picked up reading for pleasure again after the decades long break I had taken, fiction was my last resort; i felt I had too much to learn to waste my free time on fiction. But then I rediscovered it, and soon after, the H Potter series. But opposite of your reading habits, I am sure I might want to take a break between volumes of the fictional series; I cannot identify with waiting for a new installment to come out… Good luck, maybe read some non-fiction or unrelated fiction while waiting? I have some titles to recommend if you’re interested…

  3. taylhis — A few posts ago (Ok, A lot of posts ago) I did compile a reading list. Or a list of things I read. I do read some non fiction, but I tend to center around mysteries, fantasy and Science Fiction. I am always open to suggestions on reading material.

  4. I checked out the first book some time back. I didn’t care for it- I never finished it. As for rereading, I have been planning to read Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series again. Or rather, reread the six or seven books from the series I read before, then read the rest of the series. At the time I was reading these, the books were still being written with a year or more wait between them. By the time I got to the last book I read, I had forgotten many details from the first few.

  5. I remember the Wheel of Time series, I may have to look those up again. Yes, some people react to the Covenant series just like you did derek. My wife never could understand what I saw in them, but she did like most of the other stuff I read.
