My list of books…

Ok, it is late at night, early in the morning again.  I had about 1/2 hour nap earlier today, and I’m wide awake again…  So my list of favorite books.

1 – 4  The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings Trilogy  — Tolkien

5-11  The 7 Harry Potter Books  — Rowling

12-14  The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant Trilogy  — Donaldson?

15 – 20    Maybe more, but since I’m going by memory…  Isaac Asimov’s  Robot/Foundation Series  He went and tied many of his books together, I like all of them

21 A Christmas Carol  — Dickens

22 Complete Works of Edgar Allen Poe

23 Complete Sherlock Holmes  — Doyle

24-26  Second Chronicles of Thomas Covenant  — Donaldson

27-28  Mirror of Her Dreams/A Man Rides Through  — Donaldson

29 Isaac Asimov GOLD

30 Isaac Asimov Silver

31  Chronicles of Narnia — Lewis

32  Ring World  — Niven

33  Journey to the Center of the Earth  — Verne

34 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea — Verne

35 A Wrinkle in Time  —  L’Engle

That’s a start, I can add more later

  1. very nice… many of my favorites and others I have not heard of. My top choices would be the same but harder for me to decide which to put on top (Potter or Rings). Donaldson ?

  2. jamiahsh, I was positive about the Lord of the Rings right at the top. I first read this book when I was 13 or 14. Since I was 25, I’ve been reading the entire thing every year around my birthday. It will be 25 years next February.

I’m not sure you would like the Donaldson (Stephen R.) books. They take some getting used to since the “hero” is more of an “anti-hero”. The character is not written to be liked. I know quite a few people who couldn’t get through them.

taylhis, I’m not sure about the Journey to the Center of the Earth movie. It may be one of those I write nasty things about, because it didn’t follow the book. From what I can see from the trailers, it won’t follow the book.

  3. I’m not sure why I have never read C.S. Lewis’s Narnia series or Tolkien’s Rings series (I’m deprived, I know) but some series I really enjoyed were Harry Potter, Terry Brook’s Sword of Shannara epic, Terry Goodkind’s Sword of Truth epic, Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time epic, Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books, Piers Anthony’s Xanth books, and I remember a ten book series by L. Ron Hubbard (I can’t remember the name of the series) I read several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed. It’s too bad his self-made “religion” ruins my respect for him.

  4. Mission Earth was the series by Hubbard. I just remembered another book of his I enjoyed- Battlefield Earth. I didn’t enjoy the movie so much though. Oh, I read and enjoyed Isaac Asimov’s Foundation series as well.

  5. derek, I forgot all about the Sword of Shannara books, I only read the first 6, I think. The Xanth books are just a lot of fun. I also like Robert Asprin’s Thieves World and Myth Adventure books.

It looks like I’m going to have to add to my list. I’ll work on my definitive top 100 and have an actual list in the future.

  6. Would you believe I’m reading a Robert Asprin book right now? It’s called Dragons Wild. He’s another author I’ve enjoyed. I remember reading the graphic novels for M.Y.T.H. Inc. They got me into the real books.

If I remember correctly there were four books in the Sword of Shannara series. The next trilogy was the Heritage of Shannara, which I didn’t enjoy quite as much. There is another Shannara series at my library, but I am waiting for book three to be released before I start reading it. Ever since Robert Jordan, I try to be careful. I got to about book seven or eight in his Wheel of Time series and realized that I was forgetting what happened in the first books because it was so long between releases of books. Now that the series is complete, even if another author had to step in and finish his last book (may he rest in peace), I will start it over again.
