Breathing is Necessary

One more rehearsal and then I will have the Thanksgiving break.  All is Well.  I got to my lesson today and there was an anthology of Christmas favorites on the piano.  Oddly enough, I have been getting in the festive mood just a bit.  Perhaps it is the facebook friend who has taken up the mantle left by Emily who always had her house ready by the beginning of November (not exaggerating). On to the lesson:

I decided to focus on some of the more serious songs this week.  The first went well… some lyric problems but nothing monumental.  The second is one of those traditionally, deceptively simple pieces… beautiful but deceptive.  We decided that this piece is a study in when and when not to breathe.  More of a pick the song apart and put it back together.  I can’t breathe in the middle of the word “loooong… iiiing” when it is held for 6 beats.  Phrasing, breathing, don’t forget to breath… fill up the belly.  HEHEHE!

“No Breathe… No Life.”  Wise words Miyagi-san.

  1. Hmm… Hubby is always trying to get me to let us put up the Christmas decorations in the beginning of November, maybe I should seriously consider it. This year it’s tough since last year was such a tough Christmas, right now those songs and decorations are still a source of sadness. I really need to work on focusing on the REAL meaning of Christmas – that’s one aspect of the holiday I’m greatly looking forward to. Perhaps putting up the decorations early will help me focus on celebrating the birth of Christ more than remind me of losing loved ones at the holidays?

  2. I think there is always a touch of sadness in the holidays in addition to the joy. I think I remember the ones lost more at this time of year than any other. But yeah, maybe decorating early would help? I would have to move out before being able to decorate before Thanksgiving. One of the many wonderful things I fondly remember. Of course, you probably do not have a tree for very room in the house 😉

  3. Ah, breath control. One of my problems with a couple of Jekyll & Hyde songs. Though I really shouldn’t even try to match Mr. Anthony Warlow from the original recording- what control!
