Looking for Meatloaf

I haven’t made a meatloaf in sometime and since I’m the only one at home, I can’t see myself making one in the near future. Small meatloafs just don’t taste the same as one of at least 1 to 2 pounds.

Anyway when I get the urge for meatloaf, I’ve been trying it at different restaurants. So far, I haven’t found one I really like. The taste or texture just doesn’t match what I think meatloaf should be. The best I’ve had so far is from the Ten-Pin Tap in Ridgeville Corners, OH. A little bar, that was the major place to go for lunch before we switched buildings. Now, I’m not sure where to find it.

There are many reasons for this. #1— Most places don’t serve meatloaf. It is too plain for most restaurants. #2— I don’t think they drain the grease. Just shouldn’t be swimming in it. #3 — I’m wondering if they use the worst kind of ground beef. Just doesn’t cut it sometimes. #4— Do they ever add any spice? Bland, bland, bland or maybe swimming in Ketchup..

Anyone else on the lookout for good meatloaf? Have you found any? Where?

  1. My mom’s is the best, Meatloaf is not usually one I look for on a restaurant menu. Once again… double title meaning… wasn’t sure if we were talking about food or the music group 😉

  2. I really like meatloaf. Not that the place even exists locally anymore, but never, EVER try meatloaf at a Kmart food court – not sure what I was thinking on that one.
    Bob Evans actually has pretty good meatloaf, but it has a sauage-y mix that makes it non-traditional meatloaf.
    A neat place in Schaumburg Illinois has the best meatloaf I have ever had – Pilot Pete’s. It sits right at the airport, so you can have a table that overlooks runways with planes and news choppers taking off. The meatloaf was huge and it had olives embedded in it. I don’t even like green olives, and this meatloaf is still the best. Do you like to cook meatloaf? I know 6 or more people who would be more-than-willing taste testers…

  3. I was going to suggest Bob Evans, also. Probably the best meatloaf you’re going to find is in the small mom and pop places that has it as a weekly special. I don’t think I’ve ever made a meatloaf that tastes the same twice. I once made one in a skillet instead of baking it. It was quite good…..however, after 4 days of eating it I grew quite tired of it… 😉

  4. Do I hear a food request for gaming night? I still remember the recipe:
    2 pounds ground beef, browned
    2 double handfuls of instant oatmeal
    2 eggs
    spices to taste
    mix all ingredients together, form into a loaf, and bake at 350 (I think) for an hour, or until done.

  5. You don’t brown meat for meat loaf… It would never make a loaf if you did that….. Regular Oatmeal or sometimes bread or maybe crackers. It depends.

    Maybe I’ll have to find some time to make one. It seems there are willing vict.. I mean takers…

  6. I almost forgot, I found a decent (not quite homemade) meatloaf last weekend. I took my youngest to a restaurant close to her college and had their meatloaf. It was good and the leftovers were better.


    Draclet — Your chili had a good kick to it, not too spicy, but enough to notice. However I found it a bit salty for my taste. I’ve cut a lot of salt out of my diet so I notice it more. But then I get cravings for salty snacks.. 🙁

    I added some macaroni to it on the second serving and it cut the salt quite a bit. Then I splashed a little Dave’s Insanity Sauce on it. Quite tasty.
