The Price WAS Right

For only the second time in the history of The Price is Right, a contestant guessed the price of his showcase EXACTLY right.  Unfortunately, the other contestant at the end of the show missed her showcase by $517.00.  According to the shocked Drew Carey, the only other time this phenomenal feat occurred was in 1973 just months after the show began.  I’m not one to make judgements, but to me it looked like the bidder came up with the bid awfully quick.  Check it out! Something else I have been curious about.  Hypothetically, if both showcase winners were to be the same amount away from the suggested retail price of the showcases, would they each win their showcase?  Even more unlikely, if they were to both be within the $250.00 range, would they indeed win both showcases?  Thank goodness for wikipedia, as this nearly happened.  However, on a 1974 episode the differences were $29 and $30.  And yes both contestants would win both showcases.  Law suits surely would result if this were not the case.  Thanks to my brother who was watching while he is laid off for the holidays.

  1. Squawky watches that but he didn’t tell me that happened yesterday. I wish I had been in the laundry room with him at the time.

  2. That was funny to see! If you read the comments on youtube about it, someone says their friend goes to TPIR tapings all the time and memorizes the prices – that person shouted out the exact bid to the contestant who won, according to the random youtube poster, anyway. The contestant seemed pretty shocked! I feel badly for the lady who had the bid that was less than $500 off. She was probably sure she had won!

  3. When I saw the trip to Chicago… you and Chris immediately came to mind 😀 I felt for the lady as well. Imagine how we would have felt if we were the contestants who missed by $29 and $30. NOW THAT would have been hard to take

  4. How do all of you think Carey compares to Bob Barker? I didn’t care much for his reaction to the winning bid, but obviously his host character is more than just one reaction. Congrats to that contestant by the way.

  5. I think he is an acquired taste. At first, I did not think he would last a month, let alone more than a year. He does ok. I also caught Drew’s reaction. I wonder if there will now be a big scandal judging from one of the comments on the youtube site.
